The part of aging you can't see

The plastic tip on your shoelace has a biological twin, and yours is fraying a little more every time one of your cells divides.

That tip is called a telomere — a protective cap of repeating DNA sequence sitting at the end of each chromosome, keeping the genetic material inside from unraveling or sticking to its neighbors, the same job the plastic aglet does for a shoelace.

The mechanism behind the fraying

Here is the mechanism, named plainly: each time a cell divides, its telomeres shorten slightly, because the enzymes that copy DNA can't fully replicate the very end of the strand — and once telomeres shorten past a critical point, the cell stops dividing or dies, which is part of why telomere length is studied as a biological marker of cellular aging. *(Evidence Strength: Strong for telomere shortening as a marker of cellular aging, established science recognized by a Nobel Prize; Moderate and still debated for how much specific lifestyle interventions meaningfully slow that shortening in humans, where much of the strongest data is observational rather than causal.)* The shoelace doesn't fray at a fixed, identical rate for everyone. Zoom out from the single cell and the pattern holds across tissue and organ aging broadly: the rate at which your cells' protective caps wear down is not purely a genetic sentence, it's also a running tally of decades of ordinary daily inputs, most of which are still adjustable today.

It means the lever most consistently tied to a slower fraying rate isn't a supplement. It's your legs.
