Health was never the leftover
Most people think of health as what's left over once disease has been ruled out. Clean bloodwork, no diagnosis, nothing wrong on the scan — call it health and move on. In thirty-six years of practice, I have come to believe that definition is exactly backwards.
A patient I've seen more times than I can count arrives with a folder of normal results and a face that doesn't match them. The labs are clean. The person is not well. Something in that gap between the chart and the human being sitting across from me is where this Academy actually begins.
What the switches are listening to
Here is the mechanism, translated out of the textbook: you do not simply have genes, fixed at birth, running your body like a script that cannot be edited. You have genes, and you have a second layer sitting on top of them that decides, moment to moment, which of those genes get read aloud and which stay silent. Scientists call that layer epigenetic expression — small chemical tags that switch genes on or off without changing the genetic code underneath them. *(Evidence Strength: Strong — epigenetic regulation via DNA methylation and histone modification is well established across decades of molecular biology research.)*
What flips those switches is not mysterious or out of reach. It is what you eat, how you move, how much you sleep, how connected you are to other people, and what your mind rehearses when no one is watching. Your genes are not your sentence. They are an instrument, and your daily life is the hand on the keys.
Three materials, one structure
I built Triad Longevity Academy around three words because three words are what a person can actually carry into a Tuesday: Mouth, what you consume. Muscle, how you move. Mind, how you think, feel, and believe. Lifestyle medicine as a discipline recognizes six evidence-based pillars in total — nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, avoiding risky substances, and social connection. I have not simplified the science. I have translated it, the same way I would translate a diagnosis for a frightened family in an exam room, because information a person cannot hold onto is not actually information yet.
When I wanted a single picture that could hold genetics, epigenetics, human connection, and the Triad together, I built one: H = g + e(q + m² + 2m). H is optimal health. g is genetics. e is epigenetic expression. q is human interconnectedness. m² is mind and mindset. 2m is mouth plus movement. I offer this as my own conceptual framework — an attempt to integrate genetics, epigenetics, neuroscience, lifestyle medicine, and human connection into one model, not an established scientific law. Discuss any specific health decision with your own clinician; this is a teaching tool, not a diagnosis.
So what does this mean for you, before you close this page?
It means the folder of normal results was never the finish line, and it means the switches are listening right now, whether you're paying attention to them or not. Pick the one pillar of the three — Mouth, Muscle, or Mind — that you have most quietly neglected this month. Not all three. One. And change one true thing about it today, something small enough that you could actually fail to do it, which is exactly what makes it real.
Health was never the leftover. It was always the point — and it is built the same way anything durable is built, one deliberate choice at a time, by someone who finally understood what the switches were listening to.
If you want a place to start, the free Triad Health Survey will show you, in a few minutes, which of the three pillars needs your attention first. From there, you'll find the Optimal Health Talk podcast, the 3Ms Health Method, and the longevity programs I built for exactly this moment — the one where you decide to stop waiting for permission to begin.
