You Don't Need to Hack Your Biology. You Need to Listen to It.

Most people think biohacking means a wearable ring, a stack of supplements, and a cold plunge before sunrise.


In thirty-six years of practice, I have never once met a patient who reversed their biological age with a gadget.

What actually rebuilds a person is older than that, and quieter than that. It's architecture, not a quick fix — slow, unglamorous, built one load-bearing habit at a time. It doesn't trend. It doesn't ship in a box. It's a discipline three thousand years of human lo wisdom already knew, that modern science is only now getting around to proving.


Think of two people you know who are the same age. One still climbs stairs two at a time, laughs from the belly, remembers your children's names before you've finished introducing them. The other moves like they're apologizing to their own knees. Same number of birthdays. Different biology entirely. The difference was never luck, and it was rarely genetics alone. It was built, day by ordinary day, in the choices neither of them thought were choices.


Every Building Needs a Blueprint


Here is the mechanism behind that difference, in plain terms first.


You inherit a set of genes at birth, and you cannot change them. But most of those genes are not fixed switches — they're dimmer switches, turned up or down by signals from the life you're living. That process is called epigenetic expression, and it is one of the most well-established findings in modern biology: what you eat, how you move, how you sleep, how you carry stress, and who you stay connected to all send signals that switch genes on or off, sometimes within weeks.


I've spent years trying to put that idea into a single sentence people could actually carry with them. What I arrived at is this: **H = g + e(q + m² + 2m)** — Optimal Health equals your Genetics, shaped by Epigenetic expression, which is driven by your human interconnectedness (q), your Mind and mindset (m²), and your Mouth and Movement (2m) together. This is not an established scientific law. It's an original framework I built to hold genetics, epigenetics, neuroscience, lifestyle medicine, and human connection inside one idea, because in the consulting room, they were never separate.


You did not choose the genes you were handed. You are, every single day, choosing which of them get switched on.


Mouth Is the Foundation


A meal is not an event that ends when you swallow it. Hours later, it's still being read — by the bacteria in your gut, by the hormones deciding whether you feel satisfied or still hungry, by the genes deciding how much of that sugar gets stored as fat versus burned as fuel.


Healthy diet

Large population studies, including the landmark PREDIMED trial, have shown that a whole-food, plant-forward eating pattern is associated with meaningfully lower rates of heart disease and early death. *(Evidence Strength: Strong — randomized and cohort data, consistent across populations.)* You don't need to redesign your diet tonight. Add one fibre-rich thing to a meal you were already going to eat. Beans, a vegetable, a handful of oats. That's the whole assignment.


Muscle Is the Frame


Muscle is the only tissue in your body that argues with age and sometimes wins. It doesn't just move you. Every time you challenge it, it flips genetic switches that build stronger mitochondria, steadier blood sugar, better balance — the very things that determine whether you're climbing those stairs at eighty or being carried up them.


The frame doesn't hold its shape by memory. "I used to be active" is one of the saddest sentences I hear in clinic, because the body doesn't respond to who you were in 2009. It responds to what you told it this week. Twenty minutes of resistance work, a walk, a set of ten slow sit-to-stands before dinner — the size of the message matters less than whether you send it.


Mind Is the Wiring


In 1999, researchers at the University of Chicago restricted eleven healthy young men to four hours in bed a night for six nights. Just six. Chronic stress and poor sleep don't announce themselves. They accrue, quietly, the way interest accrues on a debt you forgot you were carrying. They're maintenance on the wiring that keeps every other system running.


The House Next Door


There's an Igbo saying: *igwe bu ike* — there is strength in numbers.


Human connection isn't the soft part of this framework. Call the friend. Keep the standing dinner. The house next door is load-bearing too.


Pick One Room, Not the Whole Build


None of this matters unless it changes one thing you actually do this week.


So don't try to overhaul your diet, start a training programme, fix your sleep, and rebuild your social calendar on the same Monday. That's how good intentions die by Thursday. Pick one room. Add the fibre. Do the ten sit-to-stands. Send the text. Build one thing well before you touch the next.


Longevity was never a hack you could buy. It's an architecture only you can build, one honest day at a time — and someone, eventually, is going to inherit the one you're building right now.
